What is a KWL/KWHL Worksheet?

KWL stands for KNOW, WONDER, LEARN. An optional H can also be added for HOW. KWL can come in many different formats, but the most common is a three-column chart.

Why are they important and how are they best used?

KWL charts are versatile and can be used at many different levels, from kindergarten to high school and in different subject areas. One of the purposes of a KWL chart is to stimulate prior knowledge and get students really thinking about the topic. Filling in a KWL chart as a small group or whole class can be especially effective in engaging students about what they already know and what they WANT to know.
