Folier anvendes i alle typer litteratur. Et tegn, der udviser modsatte eller modstridende træk til et andet tegn, hedder en folie. Folie tegn kan være antagonister, men ikke altid. Nogle gange vil folier endda være andre tegn sammen med hovedpersonen. Når en forfatter bruger en folie, vil de sørge for, at læseren henter på vigtige attributter og karakteristika ved hovedpersonen. Af denne grund er folier vigtige at passe på!
