Vi drømmer alle om perfeksjon: den omhyggeliggjorte fysiske og dyktige evnen til en olympisk idrettsutøver; det perfekte familiemålet, som et Norman Rockwell-maleri; det perfekt harmoniske samfunnet, med alle lykkelig å gå om livet deres. Men fullkommenhet kommer til en pris, og forblir alltid ut av rekkevidde. Denne motsetningen er bare en av grunnene til at dystopier har fengslet lesere i alle aldre. Ideen om utopi, i tillegg til den sterke virkeligheten at den aldri kan eksistere, gjør en overbevisende ramme for sosial kommentar og kritikk.
