Bullying Prevention & Education

With the rise of social media in recent decades, educators have seen an increase in both cyberbullying and traditional bullying among school-aged youth. In recognition of this, many schools have made bullying awareness and prevention a priority. The first step in making a difference is education. Faculty, staff, parents, and students all need to be educated in identifying, responding to, and preventing bullying.

We give and get instructions all of the time, whether it is a tutorial on a website, a recipe for dinner, or directions to the post office. We go through various processes too, as do many natural phenomena. Life cycles, routines, photosynthesis, digestion - processes are everywhere! Instructions and processes are so much more easily understood when accompanied by visuals. When we storyboard a process or create a sequential diagram, we can focus on discrete steps, cause and effect, and sequence.

  • Any faculty or staff who witnesses or receives a report of bullying should refer the situation to the principal by filing an incident report that day.
  • The principal or designated administrator will promptly notify the parent(s)/guardian(s) of all students involved in an alleged incident of bullying and discuss, as appropriate, the availability of social work services, counseling, school psychological services, other interventions, and restorative measures.
  • The principal or designated administrator will investigate the incident and determine an outcome within ten school days of the original incident report.
  • The principal or dean will enforce disciplinary measures as appropriate.
  • Records of the incident will be placed in the students’ files until graduation or transfer. If disciplinary action is implemented, the report will remain in the student’s permanent record file.
